Sandra Shaw

Meet Sandra Shaw, a WFC Certified Home Health Aide who has provided care to aging seniors for twelve years. Sandra credits her family and growing up in Jamaica as her main reasons for being a caregiver. Sandra watched both her great grandmother and grandmother benefit from the private care nurses each had in their senior years. And she believes Jamaica to have a more family-oriented culture than other countries.

She says caregiving is “part of my personality,” which she put to good use as a Kindergarten teacher and a Ritz-Carlton Guest Services Associate in Jamaica. She came to the USA in 2010, acquired certification as a Home Health Aide, and has been an in-home caregiver since then.

Sandra spent 10-11 years as a permanent live-in HHA for a client with dementia. While finding the case challenging work, she went for special training in caring for Alzheimer’s patients, which prepared her to deal with her client’s memory loss. She believes that special training added quality to the care for her client.

She was not an angry person; just lost sometimes and had mood swings at different times of the day. She leaned on me, and we came to work together very well. I tried to do a lot for her, like taking her out of her moody situations by playing music, dancing, and going out for walks. She loved that.

Sandra joined Westchester Family Care about two years ago when she was introduced to it by another caregiver. She characterizes WFC’s culture as very similar to what she grew up with in Jamaica – family-oriented and taking care of each other. After all those years as a private HHA, Sandra welcomes being part of a like-minded community and feels like she’s found a home. In the same way that she added value to her Alzheimer’s client’s life, she appreciates that WFC goes above and beyond the care services provided by other agencies.

Sandra enjoys working with clients and believes she has benefitted from the special relationship that in-home care fosters.

Each client has specific needs, and I navigate the case individually, depending on those needs. Over the years, clients have taught me to be patient, have more tolerance, and not give up on them. I think I’m a caring person. I enjoy making life better for my clients.

We enjoy the work you do too, Sandra. Keep on caring for and making a difference in clients’ lives!

Testimonial:

I’m a “people” person and I enjoy working. I love working with WFC because they are very organized. They’re structured better than other agencies. They do very well to match you with clients by your availability. I enjoy learning and WFC offers programs on how to be a better care provider.
