Meet John Palma, Human Resources Coordinator at Westchester Family Center (WFC). As HR Coordinator, John’s responsibilities include all aspects of talent management: recruiting, processing, and onboarding incoming new caregiver hires.

John also conducts compliance adherence, audits employee files, and schedules caregivers for in-home care of WFC clients. Separately, he has been reviewing and implementing new recruiting systems as well as orienting caregivers with both standard and new company systems/procedures.

John’s main interaction is with the caregivers:

  • Interview prospective caregivers
  • Process paperwork for incoming caregivers
  • Onboarding
  • Compliance with caregivers
  • Schedule caregivers with clients
  • Audits on employee files
  • Troubleshoot with caregivers

John says that while the job requires patience and understanding, he likes listening to both caregivers and clients. His goal is always trying to get clients to bounce back from medical or emotional setbacks to as much of 100% as possible.

“I have a passion for healthcare. I like the feeling I get from helping those who need help and making sure that the outcomes are the best ones possible. I believe the best way to figure out how to solve problems is to listen, assess, and listen a little more. You do what needs to get done to make it work by taking the time to make sure everything flows properly.”

John feels that he adapts well to change which helps in the home care business. Especially during the initial 5-6 months of COVID when all were thrown off-guard. The pandemic accelerated a process John and the team were already setting up to migrate in-person processes to digital platforms. The pandemic added some urgency to these activities, and it became learn-as-you-go because, of necessity, the pace became faster. He says it’s been great to collaborate with colleagues on new methods of recruiting, training, and onboarding and getting the job done well, even under stressful and isolated conditions.

At the end of the day, John enjoys being able to fully use all of his skills daily here at WFC. Both Glenn Lane, Founder, and his supervisor, Melanie De Villiers, have been tasking him with implementing new recruiting systems as well as orienting caregivers with company systems. He’s encouraged to do what needs to get done to make it work by taking the time to make sure everything flows properly.
